Emelec faces sanctions and integrity concerns in Ecuador
Emelec has received multiple disciplinary sanctions from LigaPro following incidents during a match against Guayaquil City at the Christian Benítez Stadium. The sanctions include the partial closure of the General Avenida Quito stands for one match due to fires ignited by fans. The club also faces $1,750 in total fines for pyrotechnics, unauthorized entry, and the throwing of objects.
Individual suspensions were also issued: player Jaime Ayoví received a two-match ban, and physical trainer Mauro Ceruti was suspended for three matches following insults directed at the referee.
Separately, Emelec president José David Jiménez has raised alarms regarding the integrity of Ecuadorian football. Jiménez reported receiving threats during nearly every match and warned of potential match-fixing and issues involving refereeing. He emphasized the urgent need for stricter regulations regarding sports betting to protect the credibility of national competitions.
