South American Games 2026 open in Rosario, Argentina
The XIII South American Games officially opened in Rosario, Argentina, with a large-scale ceremony at the Monumento Nacional a la Bandera. The event, which includes over 4,000 athletes from 15 countries competing in 43 sports and 60 disciplines, will continue in Rosario, Santa Fe, and Rafaela until September 26. The opening ceremony featured performances by artists such as Abel Pintos and Juan Carlos Baglietto, and the ceremonial cauldron was lit by hockey legend Luciana Aymar.
Competition has already begun, with several athletes securing medals. Argentina's Romina Imwinkelried earned a bronze medal in open water swimming, marking the nation's first medal of the games. In fencing, Pascual Di Tella secured a gold medal in men's individual sabre, defeating Venezuela's Eliecer Romero. Venezuela also saw early success in billiards, with Flailin Guanipa winning gold in 10-ball men's and Johanna Espinoza taking silver in Heyball. Paraguay's Charles Hockin also reached the podium with a bronze in the 50m backstroke.
