Argentina faces surge in syphilis cases among young adults

Syphilis cases in Argentina have quadrupled between 2021 and 2025, with more than 46,000 reported diagnoses in the last year. The incidence rate has reached 117.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The outbreak primarily affects young people, with 76% of those infected falling within the 15 to 39 age range, specifically concentrated among those aged 20 to 29.

Health experts attribute this rise to several factors, including low risk perception, insufficient implementation of Comprehensive Sexual Education (ESI) in schools, and misconceptions regarding consistent condom use. Medical professionals emphasize the need for ‘double protection’—combining effective contraceptives with condoms—to mitigate transmission.

In response to rising infection rates, the Municipality of Olavarría, in coordination with the Buenos Aires Provincial Ministry of Health, has inaugurated two new rapid testing centers for HIV and syphilis. Located at Primary Health Care Centers (CAPS) No. 5 and No. 7, these facilities aim to decentralize care and provide timely, confidential, and free diagnoses. The centers also offer Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), providing antiretroviral and antibiotic treatments within 72 hours of unprotected sexual contact.
