South American infrastructure demands grow for Route 5 and Cristo Redentor Pass

Regional leaders and engineers are calling for urgent infrastructure improvements to support logistics and international trade in South America.

In Argentina, an open letter addressed to YPF CEO Horacio Marín advocates for the transformation of National Route 5 into a full highway between Mercedes and Santa Rosa. The proposal aims to address logistical bottlenecks expected from the growth of the Vaca Muerta region, which will require massive volumes of sand and increased truck traffic. Proponents suggest the 500-kilometer project could be completed within four years through simultaneous work fronts.

Simultaneously, concerns persist regarding the Cristo Redentor Pass, the primary border crossing between Chile and Argentina. Despite decades of feasibility studies, including proposals for a 22-kilometer tunnel or alternatives like Las Leñas, the pass continues to face frequent closures. Experts argue that the lack of a permanent solution hinders the efficiency of the bioceanic corridor, which is essential for connecting Pacific markets with Atlantic ports.
