South American mollusks identified as invasive species globally
Researchers from the National University of La Plata and the eMIAS group have identified 29 species of mollusks native to South America that have spread across the globe. The study, involving scientists from six countries, tracks how these aquatic and terrestrial species were introduced to 11 different regions worldwide through human activity.
These invasive species pose significant ecological and socioeconomic risks. Beyond disrupting native food chains, certain clams and snails can cause infrastructure damage, such as clogging cooling ducts in power plants. The research highlights the need to monitor these non-native species to mitigate their impact on global ecosystems and economies.
