South American Nations Expand Air Quality Monitoring Efforts

Peru's environmental authority OEFA inaugurated two new real‑time air‑quality monitoring stations in the rural communities of Cala Calay and Huisa Colluyo in Espinar Province, Cusco. The stations, one powered by solar panels, are part of a S/ 6.3 million investment that will bring reliable air‑quality data to more than 57,000 residents. OEFA general manager Jorge Gutiérrez said, “These stations allow us to improve our response capacity,” highlighting the goal of faster detection of pollution incidents.

In Ecuador, researchers at the University of Cuenca demonstrated that satellite‑derived pollution measurements correlate with ground‑based sensors in Cuenca and Quito at about a 98 % level. Project lead Danilo Mejía noted the high cost of traditional monitoring equipment, saying, “Unfortunately they are costly… it is almost impossible for all municipalities in Ecuador to have a monitoring network.” The study shows that low‑cost satellite data could give cities with limited resources reliable information for managing air quality.

Both initiatives aim to strengthen environmental surveillance and public‑health protection across the region by leveraging modern technology and real‑time data.
