South American poultry market hit by illegal chicken and egg supply hurdles

In Uruguay, the Cámara Uruguaya de Procesadores Avícolas (Cupra) warned that smuggled chicken supremes are increasingly entering the formal market, undermining consumer safety and price stability. Despite a rise in customs seizures, the illegal product lacks sanitary guarantees and traceability, prompting Cupra to demand faster judicial action and stronger coordination with the National Customs Directorate. The sector’s price monitor showed a modest 0.86% average decline in poultry prices in April, with whole chicken prices falling 2.09%.

In Bolivia, Avícola Rolón responded to a local surplus of eggs in Cochabamba and road blockades that restrict distribution by launching a direct‑sale campaign that sells eggs for 18–20 bolivianos. The company is using air transport and alternative logistics to reach other departments, but limited cargo capacity hampers the effort. High consumer demand has created long queues as families seek affordable protein amid broader price pressures.
