Paraná and Uruguay Rivers rise, triggering evacuations in Paraguay and Argentina

Heavy rainfall and the El Niño phenomenon have caused significant rising water levels in the Paraná and Uruguay rivers, leading to emergency responses across Paraguay and Argentina.

In Paraguay, the Itaipú Binacional has issued hydrological alerts for the Alto Paraná department. Approximately 41 families in the San Rafael neighborhood of Ciudad del Este have been preemptively evacuated to safe areas as the Paraná River is projected to rise from 109.47 meters to 111 meters. In the Misiones department, the town of Ayolas has seen the preventive evacuation of 15 families due to the rising river.

In Argentina, the Uruguay River is causing concern in the Mesopotamia region. In Concordia, Entre Ríos, authorities are preparing for a potential rise to 12.50 meters, which could necessitate the evacuation of approximately 400 people. The city of Colón is also on alert as water levels approach evacuation thresholds. In Corrientes, the Yacyretá Binational Entity has opened its floodgates to manage excess water, affecting downstream areas such as Ituzaingó and potentially impacting the river levels in the region.
