South Asian hate speech surges online in the United States
A report by the Center for the Study of Organized Hate (CSOH) reveals a sharp increase in online hate speech targeting South Asian communities in the United States. The study, titled ‘The Rising Tide of Anti-South Asian Hate in the United States’, found that the monthly volume of hate speech on the platform X rose 240 percent between January 2024 and June 2026.
Researchers identified approximately 542,360 hateful posts on X between January 2025 and June 2026. The report notes that nearly 45 percent of these posts accused South Asians of being ‘invaders,’ stealing jobs, or posing a demographic threat. Additionally, dehumanizing content regarding hygiene grew by 171 percent on X.
The surge is attributed to several factors, including government rhetoric, economic anxiety, and the increasing political visibility of South Asians. Beyond X, the study identified nearly 400,000 hateful mentions across fringe platforms such as 4chan, 8chan, and Gab during 2025. The hate speech frequently conflates distinct ethnic and religious groups, including Indians, Pakistanis, and Bangladeshis.
