South Asian nations expand energy capacity through new projects

Sri Lanka is preparing to increase its power generation capacity by 410 megawatts (MW) through several new energy projects. This expansion aims to strengthen the national grid, improve energy security, and support economic recovery by reducing reliance on expensive fossil fuel imports through a more diversified energy mix.

In India, renewable energy capacity is projected to grow by 45-50 gigawatts (GW) annually over the next two years. According to Nuvama Research, this growth is supported by a significant pipeline of projects, with approximately 140 GW awaiting power purchase agreements (PPAs). This acceleration comes amid rising electricity demand, which saw a 22 per cent increase in peak demand in July 2026 compared to the previous year.
