South Atlantic Fisheries Record High Harvests in 2026

Argentina's 2026 national shrimp (langostino) season has surged, reaching 90,000 tonnes by late July. The campaign, which began on 15 April outside the Juvenile Hake No‑Take Zone, saw most of the catch concentrate after the zone was partially opened on 29 May. June and July together accounted for over 91 % of the total landings, with Puerto Madryn serving as the main unloading port.

Meanwhile, Spain's Vigo trawler fleet has launched its summer campaign for loligo squid in the Falkland Islands, a fishery that has been a cornerstone of the fleet for more than half a century. The high‑seas resource can yield up to 100,000 tonnes per year, and the fleet seeks to balance commercial value with sustainability measures after recent declines in biomass.

Both developments underscore a strong rebound in South Atlantic high‑seas fishing activity, driven by regulatory changes and renewed investment in key marine species.
