South Auckland foodbanks report deepening poverty among Pasifika

Foodbank operators in South Auckland report that poverty is deepening within the Pasifika community. High rents, basic living costs, and debt are forcing families to choose between paying bills and buying food.

At Vinnies Tāmaki Makaurau in Onehunga, part of the Society of St Vincent de Paul, the majority of those seeking assistance belong to Pasifika and Māori communities. Triage coordinator Henry Elliot noted a significant increase in frequency of need, stating that while clients previously sought help every three months, many now apply every week or fortnight.

The Onehunga base recorded 31,000 engagements last year, including budgeting support, counseling, and employment assistance. Factors contributing to food insecurity include housing instability, chronic illness, disability, mental health issues, and domestic violence. Elliot indicated that the level of need among Pasifika populations has intensified since the COVID-19 pandemic.
