South Australia expands vocational training for defence and construction

South Australia is expanding its vocational training capacity to address projected skilled labor shortages in the defence and construction sectors. Weld Australia has partnered with the Australian Academy of Welding Technology (AAWT) to establish a new primary training center in Adelaide, scheduled to open on 5 October 2026. Developed by Global Welding Technologies Group Pty Ltd and supported by defence grant funding, the facility will feature Industry 4.0 technology, digital monitoring, and advanced welding bays to prepare workers for major projects such as the AUKUS nuclear-powered submarine program.

Complementing these industry developments, the South Australian State Government has launched a $3 million Equipment and Capital Grants initiative. The funding, split evenly between the defence and construction sectors, allows TAFE and non-profit training providers to apply for grants of up to $250,000. These grants aim to upgrade facilities and equipment for critical trades, including electricians, welders, and fitters, to support the state’s growing industrial workforce requirements.
