South Australia opens new heavy vehicle rest areas
New and upgraded driver rest areas have opened in the far north of South Australia to combat driver fatigue and improve road safety. The projects were completed under the Heavy Vehicle Rest Area Initiative, with funding provided equally by the Australian and South Australian governments.
Key developments include the construction of a new heavy vehicle rest stop at Pimba on the Olympic Dam Highway, adjacent to Spud’s Roadhouse, featuring new pavement and improved drainage. Additionally, an existing rest area at Arcoona on the Stuart Highway has been upgraded with a sealed parking area, access improvements, and new amenities such as a shelter and picnic seating.
Both locations are designed to accommodate up to four triple road trains simultaneously, with separate parking available for light vehicles. The sites serve a corridor used by approximately 950 vehicles daily, including 330 heavy vehicles.
