South Australia reports second suspected bird flu case in seal
Australia is facing a growing H5N1 bird flu outbreak that has spread from wild birds to mammals. Following the first confirmed case in a long-nosed fur seal at Beachport, South Australia, authorities have reported a second suspected case involving a seal at The Pages Conservation Park.
As of late August 2026, 298 H5 bird flu events involving wild birds have been confirmed across Australia, with significant numbers in South Australia and Victoria. The virus has caused mass mortality among various species, including greater crested terns, silver gulls, and little penguins.
Environment Minister Murray Watt warned that mass mortalities of both birds and mammals are likely.
