South Australia whale death prompts bird flu testing

A juvenile minke whale washed up on Dump Beach near Victor Harbor, South Australia, prompting concerns regarding H5 bird flu. The discovery followed recent mammal infections in the region involving a dolphin, a fox, and a long-nosed fur seal.

Initial testing on Friday returned negative results for H5 bird flu. However, authorities noted that the whale showed no visible external injuries, leaving the cause of death uncertain. The carcass has been removed for a full necropsy and laboratory testing, which will also include screening for algal toxins.

Marine experts suggested the whale may have been separated from its pod due to recent rough weather. The Department for Environment and Water and Primary Industries and Regions SA (PIRSA) have monitored the site to manage public concern.
