South Bend, Indiana Investigates Three Separate Shootings

South Bend police are investigating three distinct firearm incidents that occurred on Tuesday night, July 28. The first incident near Bendix Drive and Nimitz Parkway involved shots fired at passing vehicles; a male suspect was detained and arrested, with no injuries reported. About 30 minutes later, officers responded to the 1800 block of North Johnson Street, where an adult woman suffered gunshot wounds and was taken to a hospital in stable condition. Roughly 20 minutes after that, a shooting took place near the Colfax Bridge in downtown South Bend, leaving an adult man with serious injuries; he was transported to a hospital and remains in critical but stable condition. Police say there is currently no evidence linking the three cases and that no ongoing threat to public safety exists.

A man identified as Wayne Hubbard, a former South Bend social‑justice advocate, claims he shot an armed assailant during the downtown Colfax Bridge incident in self‑defense, saying he feared for his family. Authorities have not confirmed Hubbard as the shooter and are awaiting a prosecutor’s determination.
