South Bend police officer and woman injured in Notre Dame shooting

A shooting occurred near the University of Notre Dame's campus in South Bend, Indiana, on Saturday night during a football game. The incident took place around 7:30 p.m. ET at Eddy Street Commons, an area featuring retail and dining located south of the stadium, just as the game against Michigan State was beginning.

Authorities reported that a single gunshot resulted in injuries to a woman and a South Bend police officer. The woman sustained a non-life-threatening leg wound, while the officer was injured by either a ricochet or shrapnel. Both victims were transported to a local hospital and are expected to make full recoveries.

The University of Notre Dame issued a campuswide alert, instructing fans to remain inside the stadium and others to shelter in place while police searched the area. The suspect, described as a heavyset Black male with dreadlocks wearing blue shorts and a black shirt with a red and blue design, reportedly fled the scene and remains at large.
