New York City health officials have launched an investigation into a new cluster of Legionnaires' disease in the South Bronx. As of Thursday, five people have been diagnosed in the Melrose and Morrisania neighborhoods, with one death reported.

Water ecologists are currently sampling cooling towers within the 10451 and 10456 zip codes to identify the source of the Legionella bacteria. Health Commissioner Dr. Alister Martin stated that any cooling tower testing positive will be subject to immediate cleaning and disinfection.

This incident marks the second such cluster in New York City this summer, following an outbreak on the Upper East Side that concluded in July with 92 cases and seven deaths. Health officials are conducting community outreach and advising anyone experiencing flu-like symptoms who has visited the area since late August to seek medical attention.
