South Bronx Legionnaires' outbreak investigation targets cooling towers

Health officials are investigating a Legionnaires' disease outbreak in the South Bronx, New York, which has resulted in ten positive cases, including one death and three hospitalizations. The investigation is focused on cooling towers in the Melrose and Morrisania sections of the Bronx, where ten addresses have tested positive for Legionella bacteria.

Yankee Stadium was among the locations identified where bacteria was found. However, the Yankees organization stated that none of the current Legionnaires' disease cases in the area have been linked to the stadium, noting that the tower was drained and cleaned. All identified sites have since been disinfected.

During a recent town hall meeting, Bronx residents expressed concerns regarding whether building owners are complying with mandatory testing requirements. Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson criticized the current inspection frequency, suggesting that the city should work with the City Council to increase the regularity of these checks. Health Commissioner Alister Martin stated that the department is responding aggressively to contain the spread and remove sources of exposure.
