South Carolina DNR announces red snapper permit proposal and conservation media partnership

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) has announced a public comment period for a revised Atlantic red snapper Exempted Fishing Permit (EFP) proposal. Following a previous withdrawal due to litigation, the revised application aims to improve recreational fisheries data collection and evaluate management approaches for the state’s red snapper fishery. The proposal includes a potential recreational season in October and requires mandatory trip registration and electronic catch reporting. The public comment period is scheduled to run from August 10 to August 25, 2026.

In a separate conservation initiative, SCDNR has partnered with SCETV and Public Radio to launch a new multimedia series. The project includes a daily radio segment titled ‘Into the Wild,’ hosted by SCDNR Director Dr. Thomas Mullikin, and an upcoming six-episode television series, ‘What’s Wild: The Protectors.’ These programs are designed to highlight state conservation efforts, including bat conservation, fish tagging research, and wood stork restoration, to encourage environmental stewardship.
