South Carolina Governor submits Opportunity Zone nominations to U.S. Treasury

Governor Henry McMaster has completed the submission of recommended Opportunity Zone census tracts to the U.S. Department of the Treasury. This submission follows a statewide process led by the South Carolina Department of Commerce, which included input from local governments, economic development organizations, community leaders, and the public.

The redesignation process is part of changes to the federal program established by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), signed into law on July 4, 2025. The act made the Opportunity Zone program permanent and mandates a redesignation process every 10 years. Under this law, governors can nominate up to 25 percent of a state’s eligible census tracts.

The U.S. Treasury will review the nominations, with the new Opportunity Zones scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027.
