South Carolina woman and unborn child die in go-kart accident
A 24-year-old pregnant woman, Baylee Johnson, and her unborn son have died following a fatal go-kart accident in Sumter County, South Carolina. The incident occurred on August 23 when Johnson's hair became entangled in a sprocket of the vehicle's motor.
According to Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker, the accident caused a severe hyperextension of the neck, leading to a lack of oxygen to the brain. Johnson was transported to McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, where she fought for eight days before passing away on August 31.
Johnson, who was approximately 16 weeks pregnant, and her partner, Justin Lowder, had recently shared the news that they were expecting a boy named Johnny. Her family and partner noted the profound tragedy of the situation, as the pregnancy was only recently discovered by many relatives. Johnson had recently begun working as a medical assistant at Prisma Health OB/GYN–Sumter.
