South Dakota GOP Moves to Censure Senate Majority Leader John Thune
The Resolutions Committee of the South Dakota Republican Party voted to approve a resolution censure Senate Majority Leader John Thune. Party officials said Thune’s opposition to the SAVE America Act – a bill that would require voter identification for registration and voting in federal elections – constitutes antagonism to election integrity. The censure resolution, which now awaits a floor vote by the state party, accuses Thune of undermining public trust and threatening the integrity of the electoral process.
The move follows criticism that Thune has rejected President Donald Trump’s suggestions for advancing the bill and has refused to change Senate rules to bypass the filibuster. Party activists, including conservative organizer Scott Presler, highlighted the dispute, framing Thune’s stance as a failure to support a basic voter‑ID principle.
