South Dakota features a diverse array of historical landmarks, ranging from the legendary Wild West era in Deadwood to unique industrial and scientific milestones.

Deadwood, located in the Black Hills, gained prominence during the 1876 Gold Rush. Once a lawless camp and the site of Wild Bill Hickok’s assassination, the city now preserves its history through its Victorian-style Main Street and legalized casino gaming, which funds architectural restoration.

Other notable historical sites include the Stratobowl in the Black Hills, which served as a scientific launch site in 1935 for the Explorer II helium balloon, allowing humans to observe the Earth's curvature. Additionally, the Homestake Mine in Lead once utilized a massive industrial structure known as the Slime Plant to extract gold from crushed ore. In Sioux Falls, the Sherman Park Slide was a 300-foot-long industrial marvel built in 1913.
