South-east Queensland adopts new train numbering system

South-east Queensland has implemented a new numbering system for its train network. Translink announced that the lines will now be identified by numerical T-prefixes alongside their destinations to improve legibility and accessibility for passengers and visitors.

The new designations include T1 (Ipswich/Rosewood to Caboolture/Nambour), T2 (Springfield Central to Kippa-Ring), T3 (Doomben to Roma Street), T4 (Cleveland to Shorncliffe), T5 (Varsity Lakes to Brisbane Airport), and T6 (Beenleigh to Ferny Grove).

While the numbering system changes how services are identified, Translink stated there will be no changes to routes, timetables, or stopping patterns. Other transport modes will maintain specific prefixes, such as 'M' for Brisbane Metro, 'F' for ferries, and 'L' for Gold Coast Light Rail, while bus numbering will move toward a standardized three-digit format.

Transport advocates, including Better Transport Queensland, have welcomed the change, noting that numerical labeling is a global standard that improves navigation. The move is also viewed by political opponents of the LNP as a factor that could complicate the implementation of the proposed 'Elizabeth Line.'
