South Eastern Railway improves station water supply
South Eastern Railway (SER) has initiated a series of maintenance, cleaning, and testing measures to improve the availability and quality of drinking water at its stations. As part of this ongoing initiative, staff are conducting regular inspections of water sources, treatment and filtration plants, underground and overhead tanks, and distribution points.
To date, 14,248 out of 24,033 water tanks have been cleaned. The railway has identified 167 locations requiring attention to address infrastructure deficiencies. Currently, 39 locations are undergoing priority replacement of damaged tanks, pipelines, and filters, while work continues at 33 other sites. Additionally, 81 locations have already seen pipeline repairs or replacements.
Efforts are also focused on purification systems, with 52 out of 55 pressure or gravity filters inspected and cleaned. All 63 chlorination plants within the SER network have been inspected to ensure proper chlorine dosing. To maintain water coolers and purification units, the railway utilizes a comprehensive annual maintenance contract (AMC) and conducts monthly cleaning of storage tanks. Water quality monitoring is being performed in coordination with the health and medical departments.
