South Florida experiences surge in small business growth
South Florida is experiencing a significant surge in business activity, with Miami-Dade ranking as the top destination in the United States for small-business growth. By the end of 2025, the region saw nearly 4,900 new business applications per 100,000 residents. This trend is particularly visible among younger demographics, with 5.74% of workers under 40 in Miami being self-employed, the highest share among studied U.S. cities.
Cuban entrepreneurs are among those navigating this landscape, though they face varying degrees of legal and financial hurdles. While some utilize family reunification to establish businesses like pole dance studios, tennis academies, or skincare salons, others face legal uncertainty due to immigration status. Many migrants arrive with documents like the I-220A, which leaves them in legal limbo while awaiting court proceedings.
In addition to new entrepreneurship, the established business landscape in areas like Downtown Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Palm Beach is shifting toward data-driven marketing. To compete in a saturated market, local companies are moving away from generic advertising in favor of specialized, automated platforms that use smart segmentation to reach specific consumer audiences.
