South Florida hit by heavy rain and flash flooding

Heavy rainfall has caused significant flooding across South Florida, particularly impacting Palm Beach and Broward counties. In western Palm Beach County, nine inches of rain fell within 24 hours, inundating residential areas and the Palm Beach Wildlife Conservation sanctuary. The sanctuary reported damage to equipment, including pumps and refrigeration, estimated at between $20,000 and $30,000, forcing staff to move exotic animals to higher ground.

Residents in the area expressed frustration with the Indian Trail Improvement District, claiming drainage calls went unanswered. The district responded that crews were monitoring canal levels and operating pumps while managing an unusually high volume of calls, noting that extreme rainfall can overwhelm drainage systems.

In central Broward County, persistent storms brought three to five inches of rain, triggering flash flood warnings in areas such as Margate, Lauderhill, and Lauderdale Lakes. The heavy downpours, driven by tropical moisture, resulted in stranded vehicles in some neighborhoods. Scattered rain is expected to continue in the region as a weather front moves southward.
