South Florida locations linked to 9/11 hijackers' training and residence

Investigations into the September 11 attacks revealed that several hijackers lived and trained undetected in South Florida prior to the terrorist strikes. Mohamed Atta, the ringleader, resided in an apartment in Hollywood, Florida, and was seen at local establishments such as a bar and grill in the area.

In Venice, Florida, hijackers Mohamed Atta, Marwan al-Shehhi, and Ziad al-Jarrah obtained pilot training at local flight schools, including Huffman Aviation. A fourth hijacker, Hani Hanjour, trained elsewhere.

Post-attack investigations by the Office of the Inspector General highlighted shortcomings within the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). Specifically, the agency faced criticism regarding visa oversight, as Atta and al-Shehhi entered the United States on six-month visitor visas before attempting to change their status while pursuing flight training.
