South Florida storms trigger flooding and landspout

Heavy rainfall and intense thunderstorms caused significant flooding and a brief landspout in South Florida on Friday. The National Weather Service reported a landspout in Lighthouse Point around 1:30 p.m., a phenomenon that forms without the organized rotation typical of more intense tornadoes.

Parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties received between 2 and 4 inches of rain on Friday afternoon, with additional rainfall expected. In Broward County, flooding was observed on major roads such as Northeast Eighth Street and Andrews Avenue, as well as near North Federal Highway. In Pompano Beach, heavy rain resulted in water accumulating past the front yards of several homes.

Officials issued flood warnings for southern Broward, noting that low-lying areas with poor drainage were particularly vulnerable. A low-pressure system moving from east to west across Florida, combined with high humidity, contributed to the persistent storms. Forecasters warned of continued rain throughout the weekend.
