South Hams Council Deploys CCTV to Combat Fly‑tipping

South Hams District Council is installing temporary surveillance cameras at locations identified as fly‑tipping hotspots. The cameras will support the council's enforcement efforts under its Clean Community Strategy, allowing officials to identify individuals who illegally dump waste.

Councilor Victor Abbott said fly‑tipping creates hazards for residents, harms wildlife and habitats, and costs taxpayers thousands of pounds each year. Offenders caught on camera could face fixed‑penalty notices, prosecution and substantial fines. The council also urges residents to report any incidents and notes that footage will be used only for legitimate enforcement in line with data‑protection legislation. Residents are reminded that household waste should be disposed of through authorised recycling centres, waste carriers or council collection services.
