South Hams District Council trials green diesel to cut emissions

South Hams District Council is evaluating a transition from diesel to hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) for its waste and recycling fleet following a successful trial. Testing conducted on four collection vehicles showed emissions reductions between 79% and 89% with no reported issues regarding vehicle compatibility or reliability.

If implemented across the entire fleet, the council estimates HVO could reduce annual emissions by approximately 1,210 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. This would represent an 81% reduction for the fleet and a 61% reduction in the council’s total emissions based on 2025/26 projections.

The council is considering a six-month extension of the trial at the Ivybridge and Torr Quarry depots to further assess costs and sustainability. While HVO is viewed as a short- to medium-term solution for larger vehicles where electric alternatives are currently impractical, the council maintains that electric vehicles remain the long-term priority for smaller vans and light commercial vehicles.
