South Hams surveillance cameras catch seven fly-tippers

South Hams District Council has successfully identified seven individuals for fly-tipping using temporary surveillance cameras installed at known hotspots. As part of the Clean Community Strategy, these cameras have also captured an alleged arson incident and five instances of littering.

Those caught face enforcement actions, including on-the-spot Fixed Penalty Notices of up to £5,000 or prosecution, which can lead to unlimited fines. Cllr Victor Abbott stated that the cameras are helping to gather evidence and combat a persistent nuisance that harms wildlife and costs taxpayers significant funds in clean-up and investigation costs.

The council emphasized that surveillance is conducted in accordance with data protection legislation. Residents are also warned that they may remain responsible for their waste if private contractors subsequently fly-tip it.
