Roy Suryo Files Pretrial Challenge Over Police Arrest and Search

Former minister Roy Suryo, a suspect in an alleged fake‑diploma case involving President Joko Widodo, was arrested by Polda Metro Jaya on 19 June 2026. He contends that the arrest, detention, house search and subsequent travel ban violated Indonesian criminal procedure and human‑rights standards, citing the lack of notice to local RT/RW officials and the entry of investigators into his bedroom without permission.

On 22 June 2026 Suryo lodged a pre‑trial (praperadilan) petition with the South Jakarta District Court (registration No. 99/Pid.Pra/2026/PN JKT.SEL) targeting the police chief, the criminal investigation directorate and the Attorney General’s Office. The petition raises four points: the legality of the arrest, detention, search and the immigration‑imposed travel restriction. His lawyer, Abdul Gafur Sangadji, argued that the police lacked legal urgency under the revised Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP) and police regulation No. 6/2019.

The court’s first hearing took place on 29 June 2026, with a follow‑up session on 30 June to hear the police response. Additional defendants, including Dr Tifauzia Tyassuma, face separate trials, while three other suspects await transfer to the Jakarta Prosecutor’s Office. Requests for live‑streaming of related hearings have been raised by lawyers and media commentators. The case remains pending as the court evaluates the procedural challenges raised by Suryo.
