South Korea addresses foreign worker safety and record dormant insurance

South Korea is facing challenges regarding the welfare and safety of foreign workers. In Incheon, the city government held a safety quiz competition for approximately 200 foreign workers to improve awareness of industrial accident prevention. The initiative aims to bridge safety knowledge gaps caused by language and cultural differences through experiential education covering fire prevention, emergency response, and workplace safety rules.

Separately, reports indicate that dormant insurance payments for foreign workers have reached a record high of 32.3 billion won as of June. While the scale of insurance coverage, such as departure maturity insurance and return cost insurance, has increased alongside the growing foreign workforce, many workers are failing to claim their funds. Lawmakers are calling for more proactive measures to help workers retrieve these payments and to establish plans for utilizing remaining funds.
