South Korea and China restore high-level diplomatic channels
South Korean National Security Advisor Wi Sung-lac and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met on the 20th to restore high-level diplomatic and security communication channels that had been suspended for approximately five years.
During the meeting, Wi presented a blueprint for peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula, proposing a “step-by-step and practical denuclearization approach” that begins from the current state of suspension. He requested China’s constructive cooperation in pursuing these North Korean dialogue efforts.
Wang Yi affirmed that China’s policy regarding the Korean Peninsula maintains continuity and stability, promising to continue playing a constructive role in ensuring regional peace. The two officials also discussed ways to develop stable relations that produce tangible benefits for the citizens of both nations.
Both sides agreed to regularize high-level diplomatic and security dialogues and to activate various communication channels to reduce misunderstandings and strengthen policy coordination. Additionally, Wi accepted an invitation from Wang to visit China at a mutually convenient time.
