South Korea and US begin Freedom Flag air drills

South Korea and the United States have commenced the Freedom Flag combined air exercise at Kunsan Air Base. The two-week drill focuses on counter-air and air interdiction missions to enhance wartime joint operations and interoperability.

Participating assets include South Korean F-15K, KF-16, and F-35A fighter jets, alongside KC-330 transport and E-737 Peace Eye early warning aircraft. The United States is deploying F-16 Fighting Falcons, F-35B stealth fighters, RC-135 reconnaissance planes, MH-60S Seahawk helicopters, and MQ-9 Reaper unmanned surveillance aircraft.

The exercise includes the use of day and nighttime mission planning cells to exchange tactics and refine operational procedures. A key objective is evaluating South Korea-led combined exercises as part of Seoul’s ongoing efforts to retake wartime operational control (OPCON) from Washington, a transition the country aims to complete by 2030 or earlier.
