South Korea and US reaffirm nuclear denuclearisation goal as North Korea rejects

The Blue House responded to a North Korean foreign‑ministry statement that denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula has become an irreversible, concluded matter. It reiterated that the goal of a nuclear‑free peninsula is affirmed by multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions and aligns with the Nuclear Non‑Proliferation Treaty.

The response followed the sixth US‑South Korea Nuclear Consultation Group (NCG) meeting held in Seoul on 11 May, where both governments confirmed their shared objective of North Korean denuclearisation and pledged continued extended deterrence cooperation. North Korea, in turn, denounced the meeting, claiming its nuclear status is permanent and accusing the United States, South Korea and Japan of planning “nuclear war games.”

South Korean officials stressed that these statements do not alter the administration’s commitment to peace, coexistence and a nuclear‑free Korean Peninsula, while underscoring the responsibility to protect citizens through the established alliance with the United States.
