South Korea and U.S. to conduct annual Ulchi Freedom Shield military exercises

South Korea and the United States will conduct the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) military exercises from August 17 to 27. The 11-day drill aims to bolster defense readiness against threats from North Korea.

Approximately 18,000 South Korean soldiers will participate in the exercises. Military officials noted that the training will adapt to the changing character of warfare, specifically incorporating drills to counter drones, GPS disruption, and cyberattacks.

U.S. military spokespeople highlighted that the training accounts for evolving North Korean capabilities, citing lessons learned from North Korean troops deployed in the war in Ukraine. The United Nations Command will focus on headquarters-level training to test communication channels, coordination procedures, and crisis management protocols.

The announcement follows recent North Korean ballistic missile testing. While the allies maintain the exercises are defensive in nature, Pyongyang has historically denounced such drills as provocations and rehearsals for an invasion.
