South Korea announces registration of four modern heritage sites
The Cultural Heritage Administration of South Korea has announced the proposed registration of four sites as National Registered Cultural Heritage. These sites represent various aspects of Korea's modern industrial, cultural, and military history.
The proposed sites include the former Yuyu Industry Anyang Plant, designed by renowned architect Kim Chung-up in the late 1950s, and the Gwangju Cinema, which opened in 1935 as a cultural space established with national capital. The Gwangju Cinema is noted for being the only remaining single-screen theater of its kind in the country.
Other sites include the former Daejeon Public Hall, a 1937 structure representing early urban planning and modernism, and the Japanese aircraft hangars at the Jeju Moseulpo Altteureu Airfield. The registration for the Jeju hangars will expand the existing heritage status to include eight additional hangars, totaling 18 structures that reflect the military history of the Japanese colonial period.
The administration will collect public opinion for 30 days before making a final decision through the National Heritage Committee.
