South Korea approves $170 million loan for Tanzanian AI institute

South Korea has approved a $170 million concessional loan to establish an artificial intelligence and digital technology institute in Tanzania. This marks the first AI-focused project under South Korea’s Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF).

The funding will support the construction of a campus and teaching facilities, including AI laboratories, robotics equipment, drones, 3D printers, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The project also covers curriculum development, ICT systems, high-speed networks, and the ongoing operation and maintenance of the institution.

For Tanzania, the institute aims to build domestic expertise in AI, robotics, and data analytics as part of its Vision 2050 development strategy. Unlike previous initiatives that focused on sending students abroad for training, this project seeks to consolidate AI capacity within the country. The initiative also provides South Korean technology companies with potential business opportunities in the African AI market.
