South Korea approves major highway construction projects

The South Korean government has approved several major national highway and local road construction projects following a bulk preliminary feasibility study. These projects are slated for inclusion in the ‘6th National Highway and Local Road Construction Plan (2026–2030).

In Gyeongsangnam-do, nine projects have passed the feasibility stage. These include five new constructions, such as the Hansan Daecheop Bridge in Tongyeong and the Oncheon Bridge connecting Changwon and Changnyeong, as well as two expansions and two improvements. These developments aim to alleviate traffic congestion, improve access to emergency medical services, and boost regional tourism.

In Chungcheongnam-do, eight projects totaling approximately 1.16 trillion won have been approved. Key projects include road constructions in Dangjin, Gongju, Cheonan, Asan, Boryeong, Nonsan, and Cheongyang. The province noted that the approved budget is the largest to date, exceeding previous plans by 153.7 billion won. These projects are expected to strengthen industrial and logistics competitiveness and promote balanced regional development.
