South Korea arrests two Chinese nationals for alleged military espionage
South Korean authorities have arrested two former members of the Chinese military on suspicion of espionage targeting South Korean and U.S. military facilities.
One suspect, a Chinese man in his 60s, allegedly used specialized equipment including a software-defined radio, antenna, and laptop to intercept communications between fighter jets and air traffic control near Gunsan Air Base. Investigators believe his visits to South Korea, made on tourist visas, often coincided with joint U.S.-South Korean air exercises.
A second suspect, a 45-year-old ethnic Korean Chinese national, is accused of using a military goods store near U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys as a cover. He allegedly recruited a South Korean employee to obtain sensitive information, including details on the Ulchi Freedom Shield military exercises, personnel assignments, command positions, and photographs of weapons movements within the base.
Both individuals face charges of aiding the enemy, which can carry a maximum sentence of life imprisonment under South Korean law. Authorities are conducting digital forensics to determine if the gathered intelligence was transferred to Chinese officials.
