South Korea autumn foliage peak delayed by rising temperatures

Autumn foliage in South Korea is expected to reach its peak later than usual this year due to unseasonably high temperatures in early autumn. Experts attribute this delay to climate change and rising temperature trends.

According to various agencies, the timing of the peak varies by mountain and measurement standard. The Korea Meteorological Administration defines the peak as when 80% of a mountain is colored, while the Korea Forest Service considers it reached when 50% of leaves are colored. For example, Seoraksan reached its peak on October 16, one day earlier than the average year, while other major mountains like Palgongsan are expected to peak later in November.

National agencies have released maps and guides to help tourists plan visits. The Korea Tourism Organization and the Korea Forest Service have identified 36 major autumn spots, including coastal driving routes along the East, West, and South Seas, which offer different timing for foliage viewing from late October through mid-November.
