South Korea backs US efforts for North Korea dialogue

South Korea has expressed its support for United States efforts to resume dialogue with North Korea, though officials emphasized that Seoul must not be sidelined in these negotiations. National Security Advisor Wi Sung-lac stated that while South Korea advocates for confidence-building measures and a restart of dialogue, any discussions must focus on substantive progress regarding North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.

South Korea also stressed that US-North Korean talks should not compromise South Korea's own security readiness. This comes amid reports that South Korea, Japan, and the US plan to conduct joint military exercises starting September 7, following recent decisions by US President Donald Trump to limit certain bilateral exercises.

President Trump has reiterated his interest in meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. However, Kim’s sister, a close advisor, has reportedly rejected the idea. Analysts note that while Trump aims for denuclearization, North Korea's nuclear arsenal and missile capabilities have increased significantly since his first term, and the regime appears to view nuclear deterrence as essential to its survival.
