South Korea begins early influenza vaccinations amid rising H1N1 cases
Influenza cases in South Korea are rising earlier than usual, with patient numbers increasing from late August—three weeks earlier than last year. The current circulating strain is identified as Type A (H1N1).
To address the early outbreak, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency has adjusted the national free vaccination schedule. While vaccinations for children and pregnant women began on September 21, the schedule for seniors will roll out in stages: those aged 75 and older starting October 6, those aged 70–74 on October 12, and those aged 65–69 on October 15. High-risk individuals, including the immunocompromised, may receive vaccinations starting October 6 after consulting with medical professionals.
Data from the Seoul Institute of Health and Environment indicates that the influenza outbreak period has also lengthened significantly. Recent surveillance shows that the rate of suspected influenza patients is approximately 3.7 to 4 times higher than the same period last year, with elementary school students aged 7–12 showing the highest infection rates.
