South Korea begins social discussions on CPTPP membership
South Korean Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance, Gu Yun-cheol, announced the commencement of social discussions and opinion-gathering processes to evaluate joining the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
During the 273rd Foreign Economic Ministers' Meeting, Gu emphasized that the government will determine whether to pursue membership based on whether it provides practical benefits to national interests and public livelihoods. The government plans to conduct precise analyses of the economic effects and industry-specific impacts, particularly addressing concerns from the agricultural and fishery sectors regarding market liberalization.
In addition to the CPTPP discussions, the government outlined plans to expand its external economic network. This includes strengthening strategic economic cooperation with Central Asia in sectors such as core minerals, energy, and AI, as well as hosting the 8th Korea-Africa Economic Cooperation (KOAFEC) Ministerial Meeting in September to focus on digital transformation.
