South Korea busts wildlife smuggling ring of endangered reptiles

South Korean prosecutors have indicted five members of an illegal wildlife‑trafficking network that smuggled roughly 200 non‑native animals, including 54 endangered species such as Chinese alligators, cobras and saltwater crocodiles, into the country between November 2023 and August 2024. The ring sourced the animals from Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand, disguising them as “stuffed animals” or “figures” and shipping them in metal snack tins, plastic boxes, and even underwear to evade customs inspections at Incheon International Airport.

Investigators seized 95 live animals, which were transferred to the National Institute of Ecology in Seocheon for protection. The alleged ringleader was detained, while the other four suspects were indicted without detention. Prosecutors warned that escaped exotic animals could pose serious public‑safety risks.

The case highlights South Korea’s enforcement of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora and underscores the challenges of curbing illegal wildlife trade that threatens biodiversity and public health.
