South Korea financial complaints and insurance fraud surge
South Korea has seen a significant rise in financial sector issues, including a surge in insurance fraud and consumer complaints. Insurance fraud involving caregiver expenses has exploded, with detected cases increasing nearly 98-fold over four years and total amounts rising approximately 229-fold. In one instance, a single individual falsely claimed up to 50 million won.
Simultaneously, financial complaints to the Financial Supervisory Service rose nearly 40% in the first half of the year, reaching approximately 79,000 cases. The financial investment sector saw the highest growth in complaints, increasing by over 86%. Notable drivers include dissatisfaction with stock and ETF trading, as well as complaints regarding exaggerated advertising related to SpaceX public offerings, which significantly impacted Mirae Asset Securities.
In the insurance sector, complaints accounted for over half of all filings, primarily centered on the calculation and payment of insurance claims. Meanwhile, the banking sector experienced a 77.8% increase in voice phishing-related complaints. The Financial Supervisory Service noted that while consumer awareness is driving a temporary spike, the trend appears to be stabilizing.
